Installing Cables and the Landscape Afterwards
While underground cables are by definition invisible
in the landscape once installed, installing them
does have a significant short term visual impact
The installation process involves clearing of
a route for installation equipment, the removal
of vegetation from the trench zone, digging of
a typically 2 metre deep trench, followed by
backfilling and landscape restoration.
To prevent vegetation from interfering with
the trench backfill or the cable itself, no tree
greater in height than X metres is allowed on
the line of the cable or for a distance of X
metres either side. This vegetation restriction
only has a significant effect in areas of natural
afforestation, where surrounding vegetation naturally
screens the height restricted zone from view.
